About me

I've always loved Latin, although that's rather cliched to say about a subject, I know. I'm sure there's a few of you out there who are wondering why, but I'm hoping I can convince at least one person to feel the same as me. I've done pretty well, I got 100 UMS in 2 of my GCSE papers, finishing overall with an A*. For A Level I got full marks in my essays, again coming out with an A*. I struggle with Latin I won't lie, and really didn't feel like I was doing that well, but at A Level and GCSE especially, if you put in a lot of work and just have the odd "weird things" explained to you a few times, your confidence will shoot up, and with a language that's half the battle, trust me.

I've taken a gap year, travelled around bit, everywhere from India to Japan, Peru to California, now I'm 20, doing Classics (Latin and Ancient Greek) at Manchester Uni, and here to help. I did apply for Oxford in 2016, I went to interviews however was not offered a place. I did take the Latin entrance test and performed highly, so could be of use in helping to prepare for that.

About my sessions

Tell me what's bugging you, and we'll go from there. I've been confused about all the same things you have not that long ago, so I can definitely relate and help to un-confuse you!

VOCAB IS YOUR BEST FRIEND. Don't lose marks on the simple stuff, it's not easy but once you've got it it speeds up your exam so much so you can focus on the things you really need to think about. I'll be testing you, sorry.

I'll set you a few sentences to cover what we will have done the week before - it helps, honest.

Questions Martha has answered

Explain to me the differences between purpose clauses, result clauses and indirect statements.

Purpose Clause: ut + subjunctive. ORqui + subjunctive (literally "who could"...)ne + subjunctive (negative)eg. iuvenem miso ut regem occideretResult Clause:ut + subjunctiveWITH a signpost word (eg. tam - so, tantus - so big, tot - so many, talis - such)ut + non + subjunctive (negative... notice the difference here from purpose clause!)eg. defessus tam erat ut caderem.Indirect Statement: Often indicated by a saying, believing, hoping, thinking etc verb... followed by in natural English THAT, which sets us up perfectly for...THE ACCUSATIVE INFINITIVE... no subjunctive is used. A negative Indirect statement would usually place the negative in the "saying" verb eg. I say that no one likes me - NEGO umquam me amare (literally I don't say that someone likes me)eg. dicit innumerabiles mundos essePurpose Clause: ut + subjunctive.
