About me

I am a high-spirited, enthusiastic and friendly individual with a strong love for History. I am an International History and Politics student at the University of Leeds. I really enjoyed studying History for GCSE and A-Level, covering a range of topics, with the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement and Tsarist and Communist Russia being a few. My passion for history is not confined to the classroom. I worked as the main editor for my school's history magazine and was also the chief leader...

I really enjoyed studying History for GCSE and A-Level, covering a range of topics, with the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement and Tsarist and Communist Russia being a few. My passion for history is not confined to the classroom. I worked as the main editor for my school's history magazine and was also the chief leader of the History Society. I have experience in editing the articles and essays of fellow students. I also taught fellow students about new topics outside of the curriculum during history society sessions. This may prove helpful for students who want to enhance their reading or understanding of topics for personal statements.

About my sessions

About the sessions:

The most efficient way to deal with exams is by having a strong grasp of the syllabus and key historical questions on the topic. During our sessions, I will guide you to a stronger understanding of what examiners are looking for - this could include essay structure, keywords, relevant evidence, and balance and counter-arguments. My knowledge of a wide range of historical topics will both help you tackle the key content of a particular topic, and more importantly help...

My knowledge of a wide range of historical topics will both help you tackle the key content of a particular topic, and more importantly help you apply this knowledge and understanding to form a powerful and convincing argument in your essays and coursework.

History is not simply a study of chronology, where students are forced to revise an endless list of dates and facts. Rather, most students struggle with how to apply and structure their historical knowledge, and this is what I prioritise in preparing students for exams and essays.

How the sessions work:

A week before each session, I will ask the student what topic they would like to cover the following week. This gives me time to prepare the relevant material, such as past essay questions, revision resources and exemplar essays. The sessions are flexible according to the needs of each student, and may include covering the relevant content, examining an exemplar essay in line with the marking criteria or offering feedback on an essay that the student has written.

I look forward to working with you!

My experience working with Ellena has been great. From the first session I could tell that the lessons were going to be focused and useful as it was made clear that we would be working on what I personally need to improve. I think this is an aspect that I was really hoping to have in tutoring as it is something that is often not received in school fully (real 1 on 1 feedback and attention). What I like most about these sessions is that I always leave feeling more confident in my knowledge of history- I truly believe that I leave each lesson having learnt something new.
