About me

I'm a passionate second year mathematics student, studying at the University of Cambridge. Maths has two great appeals to me - the excitement of solving problems to which there is not always an obvious answer or method, and the uncanny ways in which seemingly disconnected areas can fit together. For example - did you know that if you sum the reciprocals of all the square numbers from 1 to infinity, your answer somehow involves pi - even though that's a constant associated with circles...

Maths has two great appeals to me - the excitement of solving problems to which there is not always an obvious answer or method, and the uncanny ways in which seemingly disconnected areas can fit together. For example - did you know that if you sum the reciprocals of all the square numbers from 1 to infinity, your answer somehow involves pi - even though that's a constant associated with circles, not numbers!

I have been fortunate enough to share my passion for mathematics by tutoring students for the past four years. I've taught students from age 10 to 18, and across all ability ranges - from those struggling with their maths, right up to those seeking admission to the best universities. I've found that it's particularly important to put real emphasis on making sure my students understand what is actually going on in a problem, rather than just memorising a method which they can't explain. This not only enriches their mathematical education, but also makes them far more effective at solving the more difficult problems that appear in exams, which will really let them stand out from the crowd.

It's always heartening to watch my students improve in their abilities, and I look forward to sharing my passion for the subject with you.

About my sessions

In my sessions, we will work through a topic at a time, with a particular focus on making sure a deep understanding is cultivated rather than just rote learning a method with no understanding. This is especially important for A-Level and STEP/MAT, because there will very often be edge-cases on the exams where you won't be able to finish a problem unless you really understand what's going on. To achieve this, I'll spend a while explaining the topic and/or method in depth, including...

To achieve this, I'll spend a while explaining the topic and/or method in depth, including any brief proofs of results if applicable. We'll then work together through a selection of questions that I will prepare - which will start with the most basic application of the ideas, building up to the most difficult cases taken from past exam questions. It's particularly important to me that my students have a go at the question themselves first, with progressive hints from me before I talk them through a solution.
