Hi I'm Finn!

I am 2nd Year Economics and Management student at the University of Leeds. I love my subject because its the perfect combination of theory and practicality, and for me, the addition of maths into economics makes it all the more interesting. I am enthralled by being able to combine the variety of different mathematical models into economical situations and then seeing how the variety of different exogenous factors can affect the final outcome. It's solving these complex problems that gives me the 'buzz' for learning!

So what about my tutoring style?

I try to tackle the main problem that you get from being taught in class, the idea that 'one size fits all'. I know form my time of learning that especially with economics and maths there are so many ways to understand even the most basic of theory that it is more than likely that you won't get it the first way you're taught it. This means if you're in a class, you'll have to teach yourself the way that you 'don't understand'.

I tailor tutoring to the student, understanding their ways of learning, whether they are more practical learners or learn best through repetition, everything I incorporate into the sessions falls back on the feedback the student gives.

From this I plan my sessions around giving the student the best chance to comprehend the content and not just have to rely upon just doing it because it works.

About my sessions

My sessions would take this form:

I send through a basic outline of what we are going to learn before the session. No crazy questions, no revising before the session, just something to read through and become aware of some of the words and language that we'll be using. At the beginning of the actual session I'll spend 5 minutes just chatting about what is going to be tackled, why it's useful and then seeing if there's any questions about the subject before we start. (I think it's vital you clear up any confusion the student may have before moving on)We move into the core of the session - the learning. Depending on the subject, these would be split up into smaller parts and sections related to the overall topic. Each of these smaller sections would follow this format:TeachSee how much student understands the topicIf they haven't grasped it yet, go back to a. and try a different method of teachingGo through a question with them explaining as we goGive them one question to try by themself2 - 3 minute debrief at the end of the session about what we've learnt and handing out of questions for next session.
