About me

I am a History and English Language student at the University of Liverpool. I believe I have an enthusiasm for history that encourages other people to find an interest in it even if it is not something they usually think about. I am particularly interested in the history of American civil rights and the Cold War era generally. I love learning about cultures different to our own or political systems that differ from ours. I believe history is a way to reflect on how far we have come which is why I love it so much, things that may never happen in the modern day that have happened in the past interest me massively. I understand that writing essays can often feel like an obligation but I believe I can help students by making them more interested in history which in turn produces better essays.

About my sessions

In my first sessions I will find out about what the student finds most difficult and how they prefer to revise and learn and introduce them to some methods of revising that I have found helpful in the past. We will set goals for their improvement in the first few sessions and I will measure their improvement by my getting them to produce essay plans and model introductions and conclusions. I will also suggest further reading to supplement what they are learning at school/sixth form that is easily available either on the internet or a nearby library and get them to feedback on their reading by answering comprehension questions.

Questions Lucy has answered

What are the key things to include in an introduction for an essay?

It is important to lay out your judgement with regard to the question whatever it may be, be concise and clear about where you stand. If there are any key terms or ideas that need explaining, it is a good idea to do this in the introduction so you do not have to keep repeating yourself throughout the essay. For example, if a question about President Nixon's foreign policy includes the term 'Realpolitik' you would explain that this refers to policies that are concerned more with practicality and a demonstration of power than doing what is morally sound. After having defined this key term you can use it throughout your essay without having to deliberate on what it means. You can introduce your argument by saying something along the lines of 'This essay will discuss...', it is important to avoid writing in the first person and instead you should write in the third person both in the introduction and throughout your essay. It is important to lay out your judgement with regard to the question whatever it may be, be concise and clear about where you stand.
