The IB syllabus is designed to both stretch students and allow them room for independent thought. It was ths that really excited me at school, and therefore is something I will hope to encourage in my tutees. Whilst teaching them the detail and skills required for each individual subject, I will ask them to think about how what they are learning might relate to the rest of the course. Such inter-disciplinary connections make learning far more interesting and in my experience give students the originality and understanding to achieve top marks.
These skills, incidentally, give students great practice for their University studies and makes writing a personal statement much easier. In such a statement, it is essential to go beyond the trivialities and illustrate a real passion for the subject. In my experience, this is best achieved not purely by reading mroe books, but by engaging and relating them to personal experiences and other studies.
This engagement is particularly important for the Oxbridge process. The HAT tests the disciplinary skills necessary for a historian; analysis, imagination and concision. These are the skills I will look to develop in my tutees and which will give them a real advantage in the interview process. In order to coach my tutees for such interviews I will encourage them to talk about their favourite material. Through probing questions in a mock interview, followed by feedback, I will look to develop the students understanding of such material within a pressure situation.
