About me

I have roughly six years of experience in tutoring, including voluntarily and paid. Often as a mathematics mentor, I am asked the question “When will I ever need this?” I do not believe mathematics is fully appreciated within today’s society. Only after people are presented with the applications do they realise the pivotal role maths plays in everyday life. As a tutor I will be patient and help students achieve, gain confidence and hopefully encourage them to enjoy learning all the skills mathematics has to offer.

I thoroughly enjoy my subject of Maths- and although some people may call me crazy- nothing creates a greater sense of personal fulfilment than proving a mathematical solution.

I have been part of many societies during my time at Exeter; this includes Dance, Business and Finance, Maths and my two main focuses being Cheerleading and Gymnastics and Raise and Give. I thoroughly enjoy taking part in my cheer training as it gives me a nice break from my studies and enables me to fit exercise into my day. I am also extremely passionate about Raise and Give Society which is the university’s fundraising society, through this I am an event manager and enjoy organising events for charity in my spare time.

My goal as a tutor is to help students to gain confidence and develop the necessary skills so that they can achieve well above what they believe they can. Having experienced the process of taking exams and applying for university, I can emphasise as a tutor and understand the added pressures of school life. Having five years tutoring experience, I appreciate that requiring extra support can often be daunting for some students; yet I notice that students often feel more comfortable talking to someone of a similar age that has been through the same as them not that long ago. I believe that one to one support is the best option for obtaining that extra help that is sometimes required.

I will prepare and structure my lessons based around the topics that my students would like extra support on. I believe the best process is to introduce the topic by providing notes and key facts and then to work through examples. I am a huge believer that practice is the key for success and gaining confidence in solving mathematical solutions. I often like to begin each lesson with reviewing what we covered in the previous week, this often helps the student to revise previous knowledge and helps me to gauge how well the student understood and remembered the information.

I take particular pleasure in the satisfaction obtained when seeing pupils enjoy and excel at mathematics, whilst broadening their mathematical knowledge to levels they did not believe were possible.
