About me

My name is Anna and I’m studying German and Italian at Oxford. I studied German and Spanish at A-level and decided to pick up Italian from scratch at university. I love studying languages because it broadens your horizons so much and allows you to see the world from new perspectives- it really is a skill that can change your life. It can offer a person so much on a personal and a professional level and I am passionate about encouraging people to pursue their language learning and sharing my enthusiasm for foreign cultures.

I chose to study at Oxford because the degree is heavily literature-based and for me, this is an amazing way to immerse yourself in the culture of a country. I decided to study Italian because I didn’t have the chance at school and have had a huge passion for Italy ever since I can remember. I wanted to study a new language because I knew it would be a fantastic experience in which I would learn a lot of new skills. It was a real challenge for me, but it has been so rewarding!

In my spare time I play football at university and love playing the piano. I am also a volunteer for Business Language Champions which sets up activity days for school students to show them the uses of language in business, to help them to improve their language skills and understand all the ways they can be used. Because of this, I have a lot of experience of helping people with languages, and I really enjoy seeing people progress and gain more confidence.

About my sessions

I want to ensure that the sessions I create are tailored to the learning style of each individual and that they are enjoyable and engaging. I will start by finding out what sort of techniques work best for them. During my years as a language student I have been exposed to lots of different methods of teaching and have a good idea of the variety of methods that can be implemented to help students learn. I find it helpful to use a range of stimuli, both visual and auditory.

If a student is struggling with a particular area then I want us to tackle it together, working through the challenge and deciding which solutions are best. There may not always be one right answer and I want to give students the chance to explore different options and understand which ones work best in certain situations. I can help with specific classwork and school topics as well as helping them broaden their understanding outside of the classroom and widen their vocabulary. As far as the student is comfortable, I also want to speak to them a little bit in the foreign language to give them some exposure as I find that having the language spoken to you is one of the best ways to learn.

I also want to encourage students to get lots of exposure to the foreign language by introducing them to resources that I have found very helpful such as music, videos and podcasts that will boost their speaking, writing and listening skills, and then testing progress through quizzes.
