About me

I am currently an undergraduate student at the university of St Andrews, studying a masters degree in English literature, alongside philosophy and Spanish. I will have to choose which one of these to do alongside English in the future, but for now have elected to pursue all three, because I couldn't bear to stop one of them.

I will have to choose which one of these to do alongside English in the future, but for now have elected to pursue all three, because I couldn't bear to stop one of them.

I have been a keen reader since a young age, and always knew I wanted to study it at university. To study it at a university as renown as St Andrews is an honour.

As well as a love for my subjects, however, I have a love for teaching. During my gap year, I spent the first four months teaching in my school's Spanish department and tutoring, and the second half of the year teaching English in Spain.

But my key strength is that I know what it is like to be a student. Although I finished my school career with grades I could be proud of, I started it with no motivation and no love of learning. I know the teachers that inspired me to learn and to put the effort in, and I know how challenging it can be to motivate yourself. I want to help people improve and get where they want to be, whether that is from a c to a b grade, or an A to an A*.

About my sessions

Having taught professionally at an English Language School in Seville, and earned an EFL CELTA qualification, I have learned many different ways of preparing for lessons and reaching goals, and what works best for me and my students. What I might typically do is to have a discussion with the student to start with, informally, assessing their current level in the subject and where they would like to get to. If this is reasonable and realistic, I would discuss a way forward with them over the c...

If this is reasonable and realistic, I would discuss a way forward with them over the coming weeks or months, and devise an overarching plan, which they could take away with them, whether or not they decided to keep me on as a tutor. I would then set about planing lesson specific goals, an example being for English Literature, how to write a good introduction. Knowing what the goal is for each lesson means I am able to make or find resources for the lesson, and to accurately keep track of the student's progress.
