About me

Hi, my name's Calum and I'm a medical student at the University of Glasgow. I chose medicine because it's such a varied subject and I love working with people. There are always opportunities to learn something new and sometimes chances to teach too. I really enjoy learning about a topic then applying that knowledge to solve problems.

When I was in school, I had a tutor myself for some subjects and

I remember what a huge help it was for me when it came to exams. I also

remember how much I struggled when applying for university until a medical

student visited my school and gave me some guidance. I understand how difficult

it can be applying for university and I want to use my own experiences to help

others.

At university, I am the treasurer of the Clinical Anatomy

society. We organise teaching events for younger students during the run up to

exams, which I have taught at several times. The sessions usually half roughly

ten people and my teaching is really exam-focused.

About my sessions

I try to keep my teaching sessions as exam-focused as possible. I use past paper questions to guide sessions, which allows for some practice in writing good exam answers. I prepare some questions to look over during each session that are based around the current topic and some other questions to recap topics we’ve already gone over. If there are any areas that are particularly difficult, we can focus on those during the session. Likewise, we can go through easier areas faster so we can spend...

I prepare some questions to look over during each session that are based around the current topic and some other questions to recap topics we’ve already gone over. Depending on the subject, there are lots of different ways to help learn a subject, and different techniques work for different people. I personally find that diagrams and mind-maps work well to help me learn, but I always try to adapt to what is best for the student. When I study, I try to go over a topic then summarise it in a quick and simple way. Thinking about the topic to decide what is the most important information, then filtering it into a short note or diagram is a good way of learning. This technique is also useful when practising for exams, as exam answers need to be succinct and written well within a time constraint. When I was in school, I really struggled to write an exam answer that was clear and short enough that I could write it quickly, and the above technique really helped me. For subjects where long answers aren’t needed, practising past paper questions to learn the flow of a question is something I find helps me.
