About me

My name is Tasmin (Taz for short), and I'm a first year undergraduate student at Durham University. I have a deep-set knowledge and understanding for Maths, Music and French; my knowledge ranging from GCSE to A-level. At GCSE, I earned an A* in mathematics, an A in Further mathematics, an A* in French, an A* in music, and 3 A’s in each respective subject at A-level. For mathematics at A-level I studied the core, mechanics and statistics modules. Currently at university, I am part of a myriad of societies, perhaps most notably being a member of the winning north-regional a cappella group Northern Lights, and I am also the head of music at my college at university.

Having already been a tutor at the notorious tutoring institution 'Kumon', I have taught a vast range of different children, at different stages and abilities, and consequently have been able to conjure a myriad of teaching styles specific to the needs and abilities of each child. With my engaging and fun approach to learning, I truly believe that no problem is too hard to solve; we will firstly focus on a topic area which you are struggling with most and carry out a series of practice questions related to that topic until you feel comfortable and assured you are ready to move on and take your exams! Maths, French and Music can be misconstrued as very difficult subjects, but I am a strong believer that everyone can conquer and enjoy them!

About my sessions

To begin with, for new students, the most important factor would be getting to know the individual better; which methods of teaching and learning work best and which methods don’t; gauging their academic abilities; the respective exam board, their approach to learning and just getting a general gist of what we need to work on. To begin with, for new students, the most important factor would be getting to know the individual better; which methods of teaching and learning work best and which methods don’t; gauging their academic abilities; the respective exam board, their approach to learning and just getting a general gist of what we need to work on. I would then perhaps progress to working through a past exam paper, identifying which areas the

tutee struggles with most, and discussing these topics after the paper and see which area the student feels they would like to work on first. For the next session, I would prepare a series of questions tailored to that specific topic. To begin the session I would work through one or two examples, ensuring the student was fully comprehending my teaching, then allow them to work through a few more examples individually. When they are struggling with a question/ a particular area of the question, then I would of course be on stand by to walk them through it, until they were absolutely positive and confident to do it independently. The next few sessions would continue in this manner, until I felt as though the student was ready to go through another exam paper, to measure their progress, and thus the process would begin again. I strongly believe that in order for a student to understand and feel confident about a subject, it is important that they enjoy it, as it is fundamentally vital to understanding. This I make a priority in every lesson.
