Academically, my focus in French is early modern literature and accompanying language studies, and in history I have studied a wide range of topics including the formation of America, the history of medicine, the Crisis of Monarchy in England, both World Wars, Late Antique Europe and loads more in between.

Academically, my focus in French is early modern literature and accompanying language studies, and in history I have studied a wide range of topics including the formation of America, the history of medicine, the Crisis of Monarchy in England, both World Wars, Late Antique Europe and loads more in between.

Outside my studies, I enjoy running, reading (mostly in French) and international politics. I am a member of my college history Society which presents speakers and hosts historical discussions, and of the French society. In my spare time, I also volunteer with a charity which teaches English to overseas workers living in Oxford.

The unlimited horizons in the study of history, plus all the doors that are opened by skills in another language, were my main motivators through the GCSE and A-level years. Whilst the university application process was long, and I often found exam season very stressful, I was fortunate to have some very dedicated and capable teachers who helped me to perfect my exam technique whilst ensuring that the lessons were stimulating and enjoyable. I would like to help other students in the same position that I was a year ago, who just need a little extra support and input to achieve their academic potential.

I hope you will consider me as your (child’s) online tutor and that I might go some way to making this stressful time a little easier for them.

About my sessions

When planning for lessons I shall familiarise myself with the most up-to-date guidelines from your (child’s) exam board, so that I can offer effective advice to help them approach sources, translations, essays and any other tasks with which they might be presented in their final exams.

With French learners, I shall encourage and try my best to facilitate further reading and research which will help to broaden their vocabulary and grammar. For example, I shall point them in the direction of suitable news articles and websites and suggest literature which I feel matches the learner’s level of capability. Such exercises will additionally provide discussion material for the online sessions and will furnish the cultural knowledge which is useful for the GCSE controlled assessment and integral to the A-level speaking exam.

I would suggest the same to history students and shall be on the lookout for articles and publications which might be relevant to their areas of study.

With both French and history, I shall select tricky questions from past exam papers to work through with the student. Personally, I find this technique very effective exam preparation as it teaches how to apply knowledge to the sorts of questions which will be found in the exam. This would take up around half of the session, with the other half devoted to discussing articles or classwork and/or working on pronunciation and grammar.
