About me

Hi there, I'm Kirsty! I'm a Biomedical Sciences Graduate now doing Graduate Entry Medical student at the University of Nottingham. I am fascinated by the field of science and medicine. As someone who loves learning, such an evolving profession with so many discoveries and pioneering work is the perfect fit for me. I am also very people-orientated and hope to utilise this in doing academic teaching as well as giving the best care to patients.

Before starting medicine, I did an accelerated 2 year degree in Biomedical Sciences, which I achieved a first class BSc with Hons. This means that while I'm currently doing my second degree and on my way to being a Doctor, I'm actually only 21 and can still totally relate to the experience of going through GCSE and A-levels !

My degree modules and A levels give me an experienced background in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths. I have spent time learning how to 'work smart' when studying and achieved a first in all of my 12 degree modules.

During my previous degree, I had the pleasure of tutoring students through their GCSEs and A levels, as well as primary school students. I was also nominated for a national tutoring award, for which I came 5th!

I am so passionate about giving other students the confidence in their own learning and ability to achieve and hope I can give this to you!

About my sessions

I want our sessions to be as varied and interactive as possibly. Whether that is using quizzes, posters on topics, or bringing a ‘bland’ subject to life – the more ways you’ve learnt it the better! I also want to give my students the tools and tips to study and revise independently.

A typical session :

I want our sessions to be as varied and interactive as possibly. Whether that is using quizzes, posters on topics, or bringing a ‘bland’ subject to life – the more ways you’ve learnt it the better! I also want to give my students the tools and tips to study and revise independently.

A typical session :

Starter: I like to start a session with a question or task testing a topic we have covered in a previous session. I find that revisiting areas helps it stick in your brain in the long term! It also allows me to track my students progress, developing a pattern of what still needs work.

Main: When starting tutoring with a student, I like to understand what areas my students find difficult. This allows me to get an insight into how my students work and what they feel are the gaps in their knowledge . We can then build a plan together going forward. I like this to be flexible and create sessions that suit the student – if they have homework or cover something in class that they want to go over, I’m happy to tailor tutoring to that for the week.

Plenary: I like my students to come away with something concrete - whether that's notes we have made or just verbally summarising, this is important to consolidate learning. After discussing any questions on today’s work, we will talk about what we want to cover next and any work to do in the meantime.

Kirsty is an excellent. My son said that she explained something that his teacher had been unable to do in 6 months, in one lesson.
