About me

Hi, I'm Jack and I'm currently a graduate entry medical student at the University of Birmingham, having previously studied physiotherapy and worked within the NHS and elite sport. Health care, in particular physiotherapy and medicine, combine my passion of science with my love of helping people. Funnily enough, tutoring students combines those two passions too. Having successfully been through two competitive university admissions processes, I know how tough and stressful it can be. Knowing this, I want to help take the stress out of science.

About my sessions

Having tutored students previously, I know that I'm not a teacher, and I know that I don't want to be one. I want to help my students learn, and to do that, I need to explore where their understanding of these complex topics is, so that we can fill in the gaps together. I believe tutoring sessions should be completely interactive rather than the didactic and dictatorial style you may see from teachers.

Because of this, my sessions are tailored to the individual student and their current understanding. We will work together on the topics that they find most difficult, whilst placing emphasis on exam technique and past paper questions. I always value feedback and I'm more than willing to incorporate any suggestions into my future sessions.

Describe the process of cell division by mitosis

Mitosis is the process by which cells divide resulting in two daughter cells each having the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell (diploid). InterphaseDuring this phase, the cell carries out normal functions but also prepares to divide. It synthesises new DNA so it has two copies of each chromosome, and replicates some of its organelles so it has spares for when it divides.ProphaseThe chromosomes condense, the centrioles move towards each end of the cell and produce mitotic spindle and the nuclear envelope breaks down. MetaphaseThe mitotic spindle has captured all of the chromosomes by attaching to them at their centromeres, and the chromosomes are lined up on the equator of the cell (metaphase plate).AnaphaseThe sister chromatids are pulled apart from each other by the mitotic spindles and pulled towards opposite ends of the cell.TelophaseThe chromatids reach the opposite poles of the cell. The chromatids uncoil and lengthen again and a nuclear envelope begins to form around the two groups.CytokinesisThe cytoplasm divides to form two new cells.Mitosis is the process by which cells divide resulting in two daughter cells each having the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell (diploid). Give an example from your work experience of a time you witnessed holistic care.

Whilst on placement on a stroke unit, I discovered why my neurology lecturers fell in love with the field. Having had the chance to see neuroplasticity in progress, I’m in awe of the complexity of the nervous system. I found that this stroke unit was a prime example of how efficiently a multidisciplinary team can work, with a barrage of assessments completed within hours of admission. But at the heart of this is the patient, their friends and family. The importance of this struck me with a patient whose family had fractured because his stroke and other stresses. At a time when this patient needed support the most, he felt alone. Through heartfelt family meetings, we were able to help the family understand the value of this patient’s support network in his recovery, and could then include the family in his rehabilitation to start rebuilding bridges, both in his relationships and in neuroplastic terms. Whilst on placement on a stroke unit, I discovered why my neurology lecturers fell in love with the field.
