About me

Hi! My name is Lakeem and I’m studying English at the University of Oxford. I love the subject because I think it gives you the perfect balance of creativity and opportunities to exercise good academic practice. I think if you love reading the subject gives you the perfect opportunity to pick hobbies that contribute toward your understanding of the field, I have lost count of the number of times something I learned in my theatre, film, or poetry societies helped me out with an assignment!

I think if you love reading the subject gives you the perfect opportunity to pick hobbies that contribute toward your understanding of the field, I have lost count of the number of times something I learned in my theatre, film, or poetry societies helped me out with an assignment!

I think the skills I have learned in my subject have made me an ideal tutor, especially the creative yet focused lesson plans I create for my students. I find that young people work best when the lesson is tailored toward instilling a love for the subject in the students, just because it’s work that doesn’t mean it has to be unnecessarily tedious. Still being at University myself, I can relate to the stress surrounding coursework and exams, and the approaches I have made use of too alleviate said stress will be applied practically in my lessons. I always strive to create an environment where students feel comfortable to learn and ask questions.

As mentioned before, I think the best way to help students improve is to create an environment where they feel comfortable asking questions and learning from their mistakes. This is crucial to helping them develop the research skills they will need during A-levels or University. Every session with a new student will begin with a few minutes of a establishing a rapport before beginning work on the main topic of the session. Where lessons will focus on helping the student with a assignment, I will take some time prior to research the topic and prepare a lesson plan that helps the student complete the task without me simply completing it for them.

Where a student wants to simply improve in a general area, I find it most productive to structure the lesson around a specific task. I feel that revision and research should always be undertaken with the aim of achieving a specific goal or answering a question. I think it’s particularly important to focus on setting attainable goals that still stretch the student’s abilities.

Lastly, I think a creative lesson plan is vital to holding a student’s interest. It goes beyond making the lesson more fun for the student. I will combined visual aids with a compelling delivery, aswell as teaching them to make effective notes. A good lesson plan teaches students how to restructure information into a format that helps them learn more efficiently, and isn’t that the reason we are all here in the first place?

Great! At the start of tuition, my son was not so keen but after one session changed his mind. Lakeem is patient and engages well with him. He is able to explain the subject in ways he can understand and relate. I highly recommend him.
