About me

Hello! I'm Amy a first year vet student at Liverpool University. I have always been fascinated in science and after studying biology, chemistry and physics at A level I decided to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. In college I participated in the science envoy scheme were I was able to tutor GCSE students so I look forward to having the opportunity to do this again as well as tutoring A level too. Over the years I have developed many revision methods which I will happily share with you. Having been through the exams myself I know all about the stresses that come with it and I am more than happy to share my experiences and knowledge to help you achieve your goals.

About my sessions

Each session will be tailored to the individual and will be designed to help with the topics they find most difficult. At the start of each session we can decide on some targets that we want to cover in that session then we can review the targets at the end of the session to make sure that we have covered all of the essential points. Initially we can look at the theory of the topic and we will work through it together at your own pace to ensure full understanding. We can then look at some topic specific past paper questions to consolidate your knowledge and give you an opportunity to familiarise yourself with how the exam questions are asked. Throughout the session I will ensure all of the specification points relating to that topic for your exam board have been covered. I can also work with you to improve general exam technique and to ensure that you pick up maximum marks on commonly asked questions. At the end of each session we can discus what you want to cover in the next one and I will prepare useful revision aids for that topic ready for the next session.

Outline the action of B lymphocytes following initial contact with an antigen or antigen presenting cell. (6 marks)

There are 4 stages to the response of B lymphocytes upon contact with antigens. These are antigen presentation, clonal selection, clonal expansion and differentiation. During antigen presentation the lymphocytes come into contact with the antigen or antigen presenting cell. The next stage is clonal selection where the B lymphocyte with receptors complementary to the antigens on the pathogen are selected. Following this clonal expansion occurs where the selected B cells divide by mitosis to produce many clones. Finally during differentiation the B lymphocytes differentiate to B plasma cells and B memory cells. There are 4 stages to the response of B lymphocytes upon contact with antigens. State and explain how the attraction between nuclei and outermost electrons varies across group 3 (2 marks)

Attraction between the nucleus and the outer electrons increases across a group because the proton number increases and the atomic radius decreases due to increased nuclear charge.Across a group shielding remains the same as all of the elements in that group have the same number of shells.Attraction between the nucleus and the outer electrons increases across a group because the proton number increases and the atomic radius decreases due to increased nuclear charge.Across a group shielding remains the same as all of the elements in that group have the same number of shells.

Why does anaerobic respiration have a lower ATP yield than aerobic respiration? (4 marks)

During anaerobic respiration only glycolysis can occur as oxygen is not present to act as the final electron acceptor in oxidative phosphorylation, therefore only substrate level phosphorylation can occur. In order for glycolysis to continue, in animal cells, pyruvate is is reduced so NADH becomes NAD allowing glycolysis to continue which provides 2 ATP and keeps the cell alive until areobic respiration resumes.During anaerobic respiration only glycolysis can occur as oxygen is not present to act as the final electron acceptor in oxidative phosphorylation, therefore only substrate level phosphorylation can occur.
