I'm Claudia, a second-year English student at university. After studying a range of subjects at A-Level/Pre-U (English literature, Chemistry, Biology and Maths), I chose to study English at university because it was the subject I was most passionate about. Studying English to a high level has improved my skills as a tutor - I am very experienced in essay writing (consistently achieving high marks in my degree-level essays), I have honed my analytical skills, and, importantly for tutoring, I am able to explain topics in a succinct and engaging way.

I have tutored independently for over two and a half years, focusing on Chemistry and Biology to iGCSE level (I tutor more general science to pre-GCSE students) and all levels of English literature and language. I also have experience coaching English GCSE to underprivileged students in a school setting. My work as a tutor and coach also includes interview practice (specifically for entry to secondary school) and practicing exam technique.

I have always really enjoyed the process of helping my students improve in a subject, and I believe that 'improvement' is two-fold. Though the purpose of tutoring is, of course, to increase proficiency in a subject, it is very important to me that students enjoy the subject at hand as much as possible, even if it's a subject they have never enjoyed before.

About my sessions

In order to get to know students, I offer a free 15 minute consultation in which to discuss the student's aims, including areas of concern and specific goals. A great way to ensure that a student is actually progressing is by setting a quantifiable goal that we can review over a fixed time period - I encourage my students to set a goal of this sort right at the beginning of our time working together.

A great way to ensure that a student is actually progressing is by setting a quantifiable goal that we can review over a fixed time period - I encourage my students to set a goal of this sort right at the beginning of our time working together.

I create lesson plans based on the student's aims and academic level, always taking into account the reason the student has for seeking tutoring, be it exam preparation or generally increasing proficiency. If a student has imminent exams, our sessions will be centred around exam preparation and past papers. For a student for whom exams are less pressing, we will focus more on the subject syllabus, only referring to exam papers when/if appropriate. In between sessions I sometimes encourage students to complete short homework assignment in order to maximise progress.

Though the purpose of tutoring is, of course, to increase proficiency, it is very important to me that students enjoy the subject as much as possible, even if they have never enjoyed it before. Every student deserves to feel positive about his or her learning experience. To achieve this I try to create a positive environment in tutoring sessions so that students actually enjoy the process of learning, and learn more successfully as a result.
