About me

I'm a second year History student at the University of Manchester, with a passion for History and English Literature. I'm a second year History student at the University of Manchester, with a passion for History and English Literature. Both Literature and History have been a part of both my studies and spare time throughout my life. I hope to bring my genuine enjoyment for the subjects to my lessons. My degree and A Level qualifications, and my natural teaching tendencies, make me a good fit to help struggling students gain confidence. I have a good understanding of the pressures placed on students at school, through my own experience, and the situation I find myself at present, guiding my younger sister through her GCSEs. My tuition in English Literature has helped boost her grades in recent mock examinations, and her confidence about the subject. Having experienced GCSEs and A Levels recently, I hope to relate to students, whilst using my skills to guide them to better grades.

My interests include literature and travel, and in my spare time I am a volunteer at a small but far reaching homeless charity in Manchester. When reading for pleasure, I’m particularly interested in contemporary post-colonial literature, but enjoy modern classics as well. Currently in my degree, I have chosen to focus on 20th century American diplomatic history. Overall, it is my genuine enthusiasm for my subjects that makes me a good fit as a tutor – I would love to help other students to foster this interest, too.

About my sessions

The main focus of my lessons will be on establishing the fundamental transferrable skills necessary to GCSE and A Level candidates preparing for examinations. My experience of Literature at at school was focussed on the texts which, although important, can leave students in the dark about exam technique. Therefore, whilst the key texts assigned to the student will be used, I will be sure to also emphasise techniques for accessing higher marks in the examinations. For example, structuring essays, using quotations, and comparing texts. Similarly, when tutoring History, I will be happy to explain key events or concepts a student is struggling with, but will focus on the skills required to write good history. For example, structuring essays and developing a line of argument.

I will set short independent tasks within the lesson which will be discussed during teaching. Extended tasks might be set to be marked via email. This will be a way for me to measure progress, and any essays completed for me by the student will be marked against their individual exam board. All Online Lessons will be prepared for in advance by me, in accordance with exam board requirements, to ensure tuition remains focussed and helpful. Consistent references to past papers will be made to prevent a student being caught unprepared. Overall, my approach is about developing key, transferrable skills and exam technique to help the student feel happy and ready for examination.
