Degree: Mathematics (Masters) - Durham University
I am currently a student at University College, Durham, stuying for a Masters degree in Maths. I tutor Mathematics (and Further Mathematics) at the following levels: GCSE, A-Level, MAT and STEP.
GCSE and A-Level
I believe the best way of succeeding in maths exams is truly understanding the method you are using — not just following steps and not really knowing why. This is because examiners are really starting to look for ways in which you apply what you know to unfamiliar and tricky questions. It also makes maths more enjoyable because it is more meaningful and less abstract. I have always taught maths in this way, and have had some students improve by two grades.
I studied 15 modules at A-Level (AQA) instead of the normal 12. These were Core 1 to 4, Further Pure 1 to 4, Decision 1 and 2, Statistics 1 and 2, Mechanics 1 to 3. This gave me a broader knowledge of the specification and allowed me to tutor a wider variety of students.
I'm always willing to go the extra mile to make sure you understand the material. This could include making some personalised tutorial notes so you can always have to hand what you've been taught. If you like, I can also give you questions which are more appropriate to what you've been learning.
MAT and STEP
These papers can be very daunting when you first start to prepare for Oxbridge or Warwick, but I've had a lot of experience with both of them and will be able to get you to a level where you feel more comfortable with them. I teach these exams in a different way: I prefer to know which questions you want to talk about in the tutorial beforehand, so I can prepare some solutions for you. As you know, these questions can take a lot of time to think about and I wouldn't want to be wasting your time in the tutorials! Exam technique is massively important in these papers, and this would be one of the areas I'd want to perfect with you, as spoting some hints and tricks in the questions can really save you a lot of time.
My timetable is very flexible and I will always take on new students if I have the time. If you have any questions or want to contact me, please book a free Meet The Tutor session. I look forward to hopefully hearing from you!
