About me

I am Akane and I study Biology at Durham University. I am Japanese and I moved to the UK at the age of eleven when I was not fluent in English.

What we learn in the field of Biology is what is happening in your body or in your surrounding right now and how is that not fascinating? I have also always enjoyed mathematics because it is like a puzzle; maths allows you to solve complicated questions by knowing a few equations and I think that hard mathematical problems are the most satisfying sort of problems to solve.

I have had some experience in tutoring children who range from a boy in Year 6 preparing for his 11+ exams to a girl in Year 8 who was struggling with school work, to a girl in Year 4 who hated studying in general. I really enjoyed and also learnt a lot from teaching them because they all had different targets but above all, because they were all so different, which meant that I had to adapt to teach them in different ways. For example, the Year 8 girl struggled with her school work and homework mainly because she was not fluent in English, which meant that my main aim was to build her confidence. On the other hand, my aim for the girl who hated studying was to make her enjoy maths more by introducing puzzles like sudoku.

For biology, the basis of doing well in the exams is to have thorough understandings in each topic, so the lessons will begin with going through the content. Once you have understood them, we will look at some questions from past papers to see how your knowledge can be applied.

For maths, the lessons will mainly consist of solving problems because unlike biology, maths exams are all about being able to apply what you know. I will start off with giving you some simple questions to do and gradually make them harder. If you get stuck, we will go through them until you understand it and I will give you some similar questions, which you will be able to solve at this point.

I believe that one of the biggest motivator for working is for you to see your own progress. I find it difficult to get myself to work when I get stuck and cannot see myself improving. However, it is when I overcome a wall like this that I really get motivated to work harder. I will gradually make the question more challenging as the lesson progresses, which would hopefully mean that you can see that you can do a problem that I would not have thought you would be able to do at the start of the lesson. This should give you the drive to stride on to achieve your target.
