Languages have always been my greatest academic interest and I have a wealth of experience tutoring both English and non-English clients; having taught both sides of the language divide for over 5 years, I have developed an intuitive feel for language learning. I'm specialised in Spanish and Russian but also have a strong command of German and am very comfortable teaching all 3 to A-Level standard.

Outside of my academic pursuits, I'm a keen sportsman and love to play tennis as well as power-lifting. I also have a soft-spot for rom-coms, but don't tell anyone. And if you're a Poldark fan, extra brownie points are in the offing.

About my sessions

Lessons are inherently personal to the client and a learner's needs should shape the curriculum. Lessons would typically involve oral, auditory and written components but the emphasis would be dependent on the client's strengths and weaknesses. For example, a client with an excellent written grasp of Spanish but a low level of confidence in talking would benefit greatly from oral exercises and conversation classes.

Lessons would typically involve oral, auditory and written components but the emphasis would be dependent on the client's strengths and weaknesses. I am a big believer in trust, relaxation, and by extension, confidence being the foundations to learning and they are at the center of my classroom. I also strongly support rooting education in culture - language learning shouldn't take place in a sterile environment but rather in the world that surrounds us. Spanish lessons, for example, may contain elements related to Catalonian independence.

I have been studying Spanish for over 4 years. Until 7 seven months ago, when I started lessons with Tobias, the prospect of taking my Spanish GCSE the following summer was a huge worry to me. I have always lacked confidence, meaning that in the classroom I struggle to get involved, which was resulting in my Spanish skills not developing to a good standard. Although I worked hard, I couldn’t make out many of the key concepts to merely formulating a sentence. For example, I didn’t understand the different tenses and how to conjugate infinitives. As I am shy, the idea of a Spanish tutor made me extremely nervous. In my first meeting with Tobias I was immediately put at ease. He told me a bit about himself, explained how lessons on MyTutor worked and stated how lessons with him worked. We booked the first lesson and I came away feeling much better about my chances for passing my GCSE. In lessons, he is more than happy to help with a homework from school or preparation for an exam. During other lessons we go through something that I am struggling in, maybe the imperfect tense or a topic such as the environment. If I still don’t understand it after the first lesson then we will go through it in the next lesson. Tobias sets homework on the task last done in class so that you are revisiting the concept during the week, causing you to use active recall, scientifically proven to be the most effective method of revision! After just a few weeks with him I had my year 10 end of year exams. The grades I was expecting to get were 2s and 3s throughout the different aspects, speaking, listening, writing and reading. However I found myself receiving two 4’s and two 5’s. I am now facing my mock speaking exam in three days and for the first time feel confident! I understand all the tenses required for GCSEs. I can write paragraphs! His jolliness at anytime (including 8 am), patience and ability to explain is unbelievable to me! Now I am in set 1 doing higher tier Spanish. Every lesson is enjoyable. I couldn’t recommend him highly enough! Without him, I would never be at the standard I am at now. Thank you so much Tobias!

When I first suggested some extra help with Spanish, my son was reluctant. However, he has found Tobias very easy to get on with and such a help that he enjoys the lessons very much. Tobias is extremely knowledgeable and is an excellent teacher who goes to a great deal of trouble to make the lessons as beneficial as possible. I cannot recommend him too highly. My son is doing better at school and is beginning to feel more confident about his Spanish and his teacher has noticed the improvement.

Tobias has been teaching my son Russian and Spanish in preparation for his A levels for the last couple of weeks. My son Jordan is so much more confident now and we have noticed a huge difference in the speed he speaks both languages. He really enjoys his lessons, something I never thought I would say. Tobias is really easy to get on with but at the same time has very good teaching methods. Thank you Tobias for all your help so far.
