About me

Hello! I'm Maddie and I study Psychology, with a year-long placement, at the University of Bath. I love psychology because it accounts for everything - from babies to adults, from normal to extraordinary behaviour. It can also be applied and really help people who are suffering from troubled mental health in a clinical setting - in my opinion, this is just as important as physical wellness.

I found GCSEs hard, and A-levels were even tougher. However, through staying strict and regimented with myself, I got above and beyond the grades I needed for University! Exams can seem daunting but with the right guidance and support they are completely do-able. I can give you advice on how to stay motivated during preparation in the months for exams, but also calm during exam season. For example, I have learned exercise is one of the most beneficial breaks to take during revision, as it uses your brain in a different way, completely distracting you so you're ready to go again after! It is also very important to have somebody to vent to about exam stress or worries - having gone through the same experience only last year, I completely empathise with you!

I also have experience in mentoring before this. I worked for a year doing one-on-two help with autistic children in a special needs school, and I also mentored younger students one-on-one who were struggling when I was in sixth form. Anyone can succeed with the right guidance and support - seek help early!

About my sessions

My online lessons will centre around what the student wants to focus on - unless they are looking for general help, in which case I can consolidate what they have learned in class that week, or look at the syllabus myself and prepare mini lessons on particularly tricky bits.

I will start the lessons by signposting what we will be doing for this lesson, and what our aims are for the end of the session. The main part of the lesson will potentially include going through hard exam questions...

The main part of the lesson will potentially include going through hard exam questions, or re-explaining a tricky concept, or a refresh on exam technique - whatever help the student feels they need. Once the majority of the lesson is over, it will finish with the student telling me how they feel - do they understand it better now, or do they need further help? This will help me to plan next week's lesson if they feel they need to stay with this topic for a while, and it also helps me to measure progress throughout that session, and see if I think they can try something a little harder next session.

I think the key to being motivated to learn is wanting to succeed - I knew I wanted to get into my university, and that was what led me to work so hard. To encourage learning I will ask about their plans for the future. If they have a goal to reach then we can work towards it together!
