I love studying languages because for me it equates to the study of people. The ability to effectively communicate in another tongue allows us to adopt a completely new way of thinking and to see the world in a new light, and it gives us a fascinating insight into the ways in which people from other cultures think and feel, and what they value. I believe the study of foreign languages encourages a greater sense of empathy and understanding between peoples, as it allows us to be sensitive to the intricacies and complexities of human communication, and this enhanced sense of mutual human connection is becoming ever more important at a time of global tension. For this reason, I maintain that foreign language skills are a wonderful and important asset to today’s young people. In addition, the sense of personal accomplishment and satisfaction felt upon having a conversation with someone in their native tongue, knowing you have achieved this through your own effort, is second to none!

I have over a year’s prior tutoring experience, including tutoring the son of one of my university professors, and will help students to improve their language skills by offering a methodical and rigorous approach.

About my sessions

I believe that in order to successfully learn a language it is of primary importance to focus on grammar, approaching it in a logical way. Once you have mastered a grammatical topic, you have the basis for what you want to say, and you can then implement and apply your new knowledge by building new sentence constructions, vocabulary, and impressive idiomatic phrases around it. For this reason, my lessons will have a grammatical focus to begin with: we will look at a tense, a preposition, a gr...

For this reason, my lessons will have a grammatical focus to begin with: we will look at a tense, a preposition, a grammatical mood, or similar, and talk about how to use it and what it translates to in English, as well as considering possible exceptions to the rules and any key points to take into account. We will then put this new knowledge into practice by translating sentences, written and oral, both into the target language and into English, in order to get a feel for how the grammar functions. The subject of these sentences can depend on what the student would like to cover that week – for example, a typical GCSE/A level topic, such as holidays or the environment, in order to ensure that we are building up relevant vocabulary simultaneously. We will then look at the same grammar within an unfamiliar context, to ensure that it is assimilated independently of the topic within which we’ve looked at it, and to test how the student applies their knowledge in new situations. We can also test this knowledge in GCSE/A level-style oral exam situations, in order to practise pronunciation.
