About me

I am currently studying Geology at University. I love geology because it is the perfect mix of facts and logical thinking. My understanding of maths has also come in useful with my degree. Whilst preparing for maths exams at GCSE I realised there is only a certain amount that can come up in exams and that working through past papers really helped. I am currently studying Geology at University. I love geology because it is the perfect mix of facts and logical thinking. My understanding of maths has also come in useful with my degree. Whilst preparing for maths exams at GCSE I realised there is only a certain amount that can come up in exams and that working through past papers really helped. Also, I know that having a solid grade in maths sets you up for future university and job applications. At university I am part of the water polo team and I am an all-round fan of sport. I love to play music and I have done grades in trumpet and drums and have taught myself guitar. Through playing instruments, I have found it has strengthened my maths skills. I also feel I can help students improve because of my experience studying maths. Maths was a struggle for me up until year 9, I was even advised to go to extra maths sessions in primary school. I feel that because of this struggle I will be able to connect and understand certain problems and difficulties that students may have that I may have had in the past. I understand that many people find maths tricky and would love to help these students to have the best opportunity to improve.

About my sessions

I’ve found that the key to improving in maths is the repetition of problems students find tricky. To do this I’d need to know what aspects they struggle with. I will ask the student which parts of tests and homework they think the find hard and the sections their teachers suggest they should work on. I will then work through from basics on certain topics taking time to fully allow the student to understand why and how the different rules and methods work. This is what I found really helped me...

This is what I found really helped me improve. Once I feel that I have fully explained how to work through the problem and the student understands how it works I will start to work through more similar problems with the student and gradually reduce the hints and help I give until they can fully work through the problem. I will then move on to a new problem they need help with. I will keep note of the problems the student has had trouble with in the past and try to integrate these into future sessions, so they don’t how to solve them before examinations come about. I will likely start the tutor sessions with past problems once I have a few sessions to select these past problems from.
