About me

Hiya! I'm Mariam, and I study English Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Warwick! One of the main things I love about English is the way it provides a window into new worlds and cultures, and I particularly enjoy reading global literature. My study of Creative Writing has complimented this by allowing me to both express myself through the written word, and look at literature with a new, fresh lens and perspective.

One of the main things I love about English is the way it provides a window into new worlds and cultures, and I particularly enjoy reading global literature. My study of Creative Writing has complimented this by allowing me to both express myself through the written word, and look at literature with a new, fresh lens and perspective.

I've had experience working with young people for many years now. Alongside volunteering at my local primary school, I've run weekly workshops at a secondary school in my university town. These have ranged from classes looking at dystopian fiction, to individually organised sessions covering topics such as UCAS personal statements and student finance. I found the latter particularly rewarding, as it provided me with a unique opportunity to work with and encourage students who knew very little about university and were not expected to progress on to higher education.

I write regularly for my university newspaper, and previously worked as Deputy Editor for its travel section. Learning about the various aspects that go into running a paper, this experience was both useful and enjoyable, also broadening my knowledge on the features of journalistic writing. Likewise, being responsible for the section's daily social media promotion and having to organise weekly pitches has helped improve my time management.

About my sessions

I believe one of the key aspects of a successful session is positivity. First and foremost, students must believe in themselves, and I aim to encourage this by bringing an optimistic attitude to every tutoring session. I am patient, and like to motivate my students by reminding them that the most important part is to never stop trying!

First and foremost, students must believe in themselves, and I aim to encourage this by bringing an optimistic attitude to every tutoring session. I am patient, and like to motivate my students by reminding them that the most important part is to never stop trying!

In the same way that literature can have many interpretations, there are several different ways to learn. I therefore like to amend my tutoring style to cater to students’ individual needs. Furthermore, when reflecting on my own studies, the main thing that connects all my favourite classes is how interactive they were! Through general discussion, short exercises and visual resources, they combined a mixture of tools to deliver knowledge in an engaging way. I attempt to replicate this in my own sessions, in order to avoid falling into a repetitive pattern and encourage students to continue thinking creatively.

I have sat exams and submitted English essays in more than one country, and so have experienced several different approaches to assessment and marking styles. Throughout this, I've learnt that you can never underestimate the value of a good plan. However, the first step is in unpacking the question and making sure you understand what it's really asking. I do this in several ways, and will work through these steps with students to find an effective method that works for them!
