About me

Hi, I am a student at Cambridge University studying French and German and looking to do some tutoring. I have always been interested in languages and have wanted to be able to speak, read and understand other languages since I was very young. I would love to help any language learners who feel that they are struggling with grammar or fluency for speaking exams and, having done school exams recently myself, I have experience in preparing for them.

I also have a lot of experience tutoring, both languages and maths to GCSE level. I spent a lot of time both in school and out of school tutoring younger pupils in French, German and maths to prepare them for exams but most importantly to improve their level in the subject.

About my sessions

The sessions I offer can be tailored towards the needs of the student. During or before the first session, the student will be asked what they think they need help from so that the sessions can be tailored to their requirements. If it is simple exam preparation that is required then we can concentrate on exam techniques and past paper questions. If the student wants, some homework can be set and marked for the next session, but this will be down to whether the student feels they can benefit from this.

Often with languages, it is grammar that provides the first major problem for learners. Having experience of having to learn the grammar structures for both French and German, I am well-equipped to teach the grammar and to help students progress in their understanding. With maths, it may be that some questions that were answered in school were not understood, we could then in a session go through these and do some more similar examples, or the student could outline some areas that they have not fully understood and we can look at them in more detail.

Tutoring in a one-to-one environment can be a great help for student. It means that they have an hour where they can ask any questions and clarify any problems that may arise at school. The student will hopefully notice an improvement in grades at school and we should be able to notice an improvement in the standard of work during our sessions as time goes on.

Questions George has answered

How do we decide whether to use the perfect or imperfect in the past tense in French?

This is one of the trickier aspects of French grammar. The first thing we must do is to decide whether we definitely need to use the past tense in French. The trickiest aspect is then knowing whether to use the perfect or imperfect tense. The imperfect tense is used in several situation, the first being when describing something in the past (the tree was green); the second main use of the imperfect is when describing events in the past that were habitual (I used to play football - the "used to" in English is a good clue here); the final main use is when talking about INCOMPLETE past actions (I was eating... - this often corresponds to the "I was -ing" in English). The perfect tense is concerned mainly with one-off, singular events in the past. It could be described as being for COMPLETE past actions (last week I played football). The best way of contrasting the perfect and imperfect is seeing them both in one sentence. "I was reading the newspaper when he arrived." The first part of this sentence must be in the imperfect (I was reading) because this is an INCOMPLETE event in the past. The second part (when he arrived) must be in the perfect as this is a singular, one-off, COMPLETED event. This is one of the trickier aspects of French grammar.
