About me

I am currently a student studying for a degree in French and German at the University of Cambridge. I am now in my fourth and final year of the degree. Last year, I lived in Berlin where I worked in a translation company (ad editum), translating marketing texts from German into English and proofreading English texts. In my final year of study , I have opted to take papers in German Linguistics, Polish (as an extra language!) and a dissertation about fascist aesthetics in Nazi propaganda films. Alongside languages, my hobbies including running, walking, cooking and music. I sing in a Chapel Choir in Cambridge, with whom I have toured to Australia, America, Canada and Europe, and I enjoy playing the piano and the cello.

Having already gained experience teaching French and German (Years 7-9), alongside some music theory and English tuition, I am aware of the challenges of tutoring and the fact that one model does not suit all. By using personalised learning strategies, my aim is to inspire confidence and enthusiasm in all my students. I believe that my diverse academic and personal interests are also beneficial to the way I approach educating and inspiring young people.

My overall aim is to create a supportive, interactive and stimulating learning environment. I am both friendly and approachable, but I will also be certain to enforce discipline to ensure progress. I encourage learners to absorb vocabulary using visual and auditory aids, particularly mind maps, flash cards + mnemonics; I believe that you improve by learning vocabulary little and often, rather than in bigger chunks. I will use the online platform 'Quizlet' to assess progress, through which I can also recognise the areas where a student may still be struggling.

I have a collection of 'grammar help sheets' which I use to focus on specific grammar points that a student wishes to look over. I would always advise putting these grammar rules into practice by doing a series of exercises, too, both orally and in writing. I am also happy to assist students with preparation for their oral examinations, which may include practising role plays and presenting short speeches. With a good knowledge of the different papers set by the exam boards, I can assist with exam technique for a student who is preparing for a specific exam, e.g. Common Entrance.

I can also tutor students entered for the ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory exam, and I hold a DipABRSM in piano as well as Grade 8 in ABRSM Singing and Cello. I also tutor academic music up until GCSE, and can assist with the performance side of the course, if desired.
