About me

Hi my name is Kathryn and I'm currently studying neuroscience at the University of Nottingham. I chose neuroscience as my degree as it combines areas of biology as well as biopsychology, in order to explain how the brain works and how it is able to control almost every aspect of our lives. In the following year I will be doing a placement coding different areas of the spinal cord in order to look at differences in pain responses. I chose neuroscience as my degree as it combines areas of biology as well as biopsychology, in order to explain how the brain works and how it is able to control almost every aspect of our lives. In the following year I will be doing a placement coding different areas of the spinal cord in order to look at differences in pain responses. Pain is an areas of neuroscience I am most interested in, as it is an experience that we all go through but very little is known about how it works or how pain can become chronic.

When studying biology it is very hard to take different organs or functions and look at them on their own as the body works as a system. Therefore my aim is to help students understand how everything works together and how we have evolved in order to maximise our efficiency.

University is a very different environment compared to school, however when revising for previous exams I have found that it is easy to apply similar learning techniques to when I used in A-level.

About my sessions

I will start by lessons by getting an understanding of what the students know and what they don't this will allow be to figure out where is the best place to start. Once I have a general idea of the students capabilities I will stat teaching at the level appropriate for them. The use of diagrams and pictures when leaning biology I think is paramount so I will make use of the white board feature in the lesson space. After the end of each session I'll go over everything we have learnt i...

After the end of each session I'll go over everything we have learnt in a brief lesson summary which I will prepare before, I will then send this to the student for them to use as a supplement to their own notes and future revision.

It is important that the students can see the importance of what they are learning as although it may not be a subject they want to continue with in the future, in order for them to get the best grade possible they must find biology interesting enough to put the work in.

Even the most complex concepts in biology can be simplified down to make it easier to understand and with time adding additional information to what they previously knew it will allow students to understand and not just memorise facts.
