About me

I am currently finishing my Ph.D. in materials science, studying corrosion and cracking of steels. Prior to this, I worked as a materials engineer at the UK Atomic Energy Authority, helping to test exciting new materials for nuclear fusion. Materials is a great subject to study because it incorporates lots of different technical disciplines, from fundamental physics to general engineering principles and business studies.

Materials is a great subject to study because it incorporates lots of different technical disciplines, from fundamental physics to general engineering principles and business studies.

I love reading, understanding and working with new technological developments. We live in an incredibly exciting world in this regard that is fast developing and I hope my enthusiasm for all things tech makes my tutor sessions interesting. I hope to not only get the students through whatever content they would like tuition for but also give the content some context, e.g. why should we study surds, trigonometry, calculus and Newton’s laws? (apart from passing those all important exams).

As for tutoring experience, I demonstrated undergraduate laboratories and tutorials throughout my Ph.D. This included group sessions and one-to-one tutorials. I also helped my sister through her Maths A-Level and worked at a local secondary school during my summer holidays as a teaching assistant in the maths and science departments.

In my spare time, I love messing around with old cars. I’m currently working on a Mini with a friend and also drive a MG Midget when it works. I’m also a keen runner and play the piano.

About my sessions

The online sessions will include an introductory section to outline the core learning objectives of this session and I will tailor the session from then onward to the student’s preferred learning style. The online sessions will include an introductory section to outline the core learning objectives of this session and I will tailor the session from then onward to the student’s preferred learning style. Generally speaking, I prefer an active learning style where the student would regularly interact with me through exercises, games and case studies so that they can clearly demonstrate that they are getting to grips with the topic. This is what worked for me during my school and uni days but I would also be happy to deliver a more passive style of tutoring if the student prefers. At the end of the session, I will summarise the content, check that the student understands it and introduce the topic of the next session. If appropriate, I will also set some exercises to do between the sessions.

I will also conduct a free general 45 minute introductory session with the student to outline the learning needs, the expected time commitments and to make sure that if exams are in mind, when they are and what exam board it is.
