About me

Hi! My name is Callum and I'm a second year theoretical physics student at the University of Birmingham. What makes my degree stand out from other physics degrees is that it has a larger emphasis on the maths behind the physics which is studied. Hi! My name is Callum and I'm a second year theoretical physics student at the University of Birmingham. What makes my degree stand out from other physics degrees is that it has a larger emphasis on the maths behind the physics which is studied. I've studied a wide variety of mathematical concepts so that I can apply it to physics problems, and this has given me a great knowledge basis for both subjects.

This application of maths is why I love my degree so much. Applying what at the surface seems like a purely abstract framework to a real physical problem allows this bridge of knowledge to be made.

My personal experience with exams hasn't been plain sailing. At GCSE I often found it difficult to learn topics based on just memorising facts, and this often made me stressful before and during an exam. However, with A-Levels I found that I did better because I understood why the facts were facts. Having a better understanding of the subject proved more beneficial for me in exams. This approach has been beneficial for me at university as well. I find that I’m able to understand the harder concepts because I’m able to remember the underlying topics better. I believe its an approach which everyone should take with anything they learn and this is the mindset I take when tutoring.

Outside of my studies I’m a keen guitar player, video gamer and programmer. Music is a big part of my life and it’s the best form of stress relief for me.

About my sessions

For my online lessons, I shall do one or a combination of:

* Explaining a topic in detail by talking through derivations, using diagrams and providing a summary of what has been said

* Go through an exam paper and pick questions to go through where I shall step back and allow you to tackle it, whilst giving pointers when needed

* Mark any work you’ve done, such as a past exam paper, and highlight where you may have gone wrong

My preparation for a lesson shall include compiling subject material based on what you wish to go through from previous discussions via direct message or a previous lesson. I shall have notes prepared to refer to when I go through topics, and prepare any drawings or diagrams that would take too long to make in a lesson. I will take my own notes during or after a lesson highlighting areas to be improved upon and as a way of keeping track of your progress.

I insist on having a 15 minute free video chat with my prospective tutees before beginning with lessons. This way I am able to understand your goals, what you struggle with and get to know you in order for me to fulfil my obligation as a tutor. I will also explain my approach to teaching and the general structure to my lessons.

I will also compile example questions for you to do outside of lessons because I think the best approach to sustaining knowledge in maths and physics is to do problems, which I will mark through with you during the next lesson.
