About me

I am an English Language and Literature student at Oxford University. Our navigation through life is based on the exchange of language, and studying English helps you get to the bottom of what makes these exchanges exciting, memorable, thought-provoking, boring, weird, scary or romantic. English invites you to explore your interests and to further your creativity... but as an analytical subject, it also sets you up perfectly for chatting about anything - from Fake News to Fight Club.

English invites you to explore your interests and to further your creativity... but as an analytical subject, it also sets you up perfectly for chatting about anything - from Fake News to Fight Club.

I loved my high school but as a state comprehensive in Glasgow, it was less equipped than other institutions to send students to English universities, particularly Oxbridge. As a result, I learned to work hard, consistently and effectively, as well as managing to keep my enthusiasm high for my subject even when the going got tough. Through positivity and patience, I will help my students improve.

When my nose isn't buried in a book, I can usually be found on my bike or in Oxide Student Radio station, working on my show.

About my sessions

My lessons will be heavy on tutor-student discussion, where the student will be encouraged to explore their answer through conversation and mind-mapping before even attempting to formally structure it. I will prepare for this section by familiarising myself with the questions prior to the lesson and formulating a series of specific key questions to ask the student.

Once thoughts and ideas have been formulated, the student and I will work on transferring the information discussed into an appropriate structure, whether this be an essay plan or an individual S.Q.A. paragraph.

Student progress may be measured as the students increases the pace with which they are able to attain clear comprehension of what the question is asking them, and to individually ask themselves key leading questions.

I think it's essential that my students feel that no pace is too slow to start with, and that I'll always do my best to be calm and encouraging without patronisation. Encouraging learning is as much about understanding why this discipline is exciting and important as it is about getting through the exams, and I'd love to be able to instil a little bit of passion in my students along the way.
