My name is Hannah and I'm an English student at the University of Cambridge. My particular interests include 20th century American literature and Shakespeare, but in my first year at university I've absolutely loved the opportunity I've had to explore surprising new areas, including the medieval period. English is such an exciting subject because it allows so much freedom, and gives you the opportunity to explore an enormous range of different topics in relation to text and the use of language. It boosts creativity, teaches you how to articulate your ideas and gives you skills that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Taking exams is never fun, but I found that when I worked hard and tried my best, I was always rewarded and had a positive experience. From taking the 11+ to my recent first year university exams, I have had the opportunity to hone my revision skills and explore different methods of learning information and practising exam technique. I hope to be able to share these with you! Outside of my course, I spend my free time at university competing for the dance team and organising dance related events such as talks and workshops. I have found that my interests in dance and literature have complemented each other, and allowed me to develop in both. I want to help you find ways to explore your interests through literature, in order to help you to not only succeed in exams, but to enjoy doing it.

About my sessions

I will make sure that our lessons are productive and informative, but also that we have fun so that it doesn't feel like hard work! I want to help you improve the way you structure essays, as well as helping you find effective ways to learn information such as quotations and dates/events for history. Writing for exams can be very formulaic, requiring you to follow a specific structure in order to include all the content that the examiners are looking for. I will help you to identify this...

I will help you to identify this structure and to follow it consistently. I will ask you to send me a short piece of writing every week in order to track your progress and identify areas that we need to work on. I will go through this work with you and give you a focus area, and will then design exercises that will target this area. When I was preparing for my exams, I found that it was important to focus my attention on my writing style first, before I could begin memorising information. This will be reflected in the way that I help you prepare for exams. I have also found in my previous experience tutoring for the 11+ that the quickest way to improve an essay's sophistication is to ensure that the grammar and vocabulary used is appropriate and correct, and therefore a focus on this will underpin my sessions. Most of all, I will help you to create an individual style that will allow you to develop your enjoyment of these subjects, giving you the opportunity to explore your interests within your texts.
