About me

Hi! My name is Jess and am a student of English at Durham University who is passionate about learning. I have previously undertaken low-key tutoring of friends and friends-of-friends, and love to help others come to an understanding of the topic or question at hand. I have harboured a love of English ever since I can remember; in particular what literature can reveal to us about societal issues both past and present, and what it can teach us about human nature in general and more personally,...

I have previously undertaken low-key tutoring of friends and friends-of-friends, and love to help others come to an understanding of the topic or question at hand. I have harboured a love of English ever since I can remember; in particular what literature can reveal to us about societal issues both past and present, and what it can teach us about human nature in general and more personally, about ourselves. My friends always give me strange looks when I say that I enjoy essay writing – but I see it as a means of expressing my own opinion and as an opportunity to develop my independent thinking. In my spare time at University I take part in hockey, debating and volunteering for the elderly community.

About my sessions

I strongly believe that learning should be fun and interactive; I aim to not only develop my students’ understanding and answer their questions but also to help them see that learning doesn’t have to be tiresome, and is actually a great opportunity. My sessions are predominantly student-led: I want my students to learn in the way that best suits them and so I tailor each session to the individual student, discussing with them what they want to cover before each tutorial and what they want to...

I strongly believe that learning should be fun and interactive; I aim to not only develop my students’ understanding and answer their questions but also to help them see that learning doesn’t have to be tiresome, and is actually a great opportunity. My sessions are predominantly student-led: I want my students to learn in the way that best suits them and so I tailor each session to the individual student, discussing with them what they want to cover before each tutorial and what they want to achieve, whilst suggesting ideas which should enable each tutorial to be engaging and different from the last. If we find a formula that works then of course we will stick to it. From explaining the mark-scheme using mind-maps to having an informal discussion about a text on the syllabus and collecting our joint ideas in a comprehensive way, my tutorials are fun and relaxed and designed so each student gets the very most out of them.

In light of this, I do think that understanding the mark-scheme and specific exam demands for each question answered at GCSE or A-Level is key to succeeding in the exam. I emphasise to my students the importance of having a structure which is deliberately designed to answer the specific assessment objectives in question. I help students to gain a detailed understanding of the exam rubric and how to answer questions in a way which is guaranteed to gain marks – even if you are caught out on a particularly difficult or unexpected question.
