About me

I’m a second-year Archaeology and Ancient History student, at University of Birmingham. Years and years worth of History lessons have meant I now have a pretty good idea what a good history lesson entails.

I’m a second-year Archaeology and Ancient History student, at University of Birmingham. Years and years worth of History lessons have meant I now have a pretty good idea what a good history lesson entails.


The first thing is that the teacher needs to love his/her subject. I do love Classics, which means I know a lot about it. I can defend the subject, justify it’s importance to those who believe it irrelevant and because I love it, this means that when I do teach it, that passion infuses its way into my lessons, into my teaching.

Secondly, I am very well acquainted with the current exam specifications in the subjects i have chosen to tutor in, especially exam boards AQA/OCR/EDEXEL, at both GCSE and A-level. This means that I can tailor my support to the student’s needs, providing targeted intervention. This will, in effect, have direct influence on the student’s progress.

Having gone through all those lessons myself means that I also know which techniques work best for exam success. This means exam practice, knowledge retrieval activities and the most effective yet efficient revision techniques.

About my sessions

The structure of my sessions will entirely depend on the students’ needs. Some students merely lack exam practice, which is a skill in itself. Constantly practising exam technique, basing sessions on exam command words, how to structure extended-writing essays, and how to achieve maximum marks from the question is what will lead these sessions. Other students will be lacking knowledge. This means going back through the exam specification, picking out areas of content students are weaker/stron...

This means going back through the exam specification, picking out areas of content students are weaker/stronger in, and then basing well-differentiated sessions targeting these knowledge-deficit areas. These strategies combined by basic teaching methods will ensure student progress.

Furthermore, consistent feedback on student work through regular formative and summative tasks will mean I will be able to gauge a students’ understanding of a topic and track their overall progress.
