I took two gap years before going to university, and during that time I worked in a school. In my second year there, I was a Teaching Assistant in SEND where I supported students making their transition from primary to secondary school, those embarking upon their GCSE courses, and spent some time with A-Level students too, so I’m well placed to help, wherever you are in your studies! I did the IB so I can also help with that. I was very fortunate in that I really enjoyed my time at school and I’m keen to help other students find the same satisfaction from their studies. I have also undergone training for a voluntary position as a coach/mentor to GCSE students. I use these skills to help students plan SMART goals, and to motivate them to exceed their expectations.

I am a powerlifter and have twice competed at the University World Cup. This means I’m aware of how hard it can be to combine academics with other commitments and I’m keen to help you manage your time better if it would help. I really believe in efficient and effective learning, not hours spent pouring over books into the middle of the night. Being a resilient student is about resting well, as well as working hard, so I want to help my students develop healthy and sustainable work patterns.

About my sessions

Studying English Lit?

Some tools I find really useful (and wish I’d had at school!) include mind mapping, colour coding and some great note taking methods we can discuss. In the sessions, we can implement these methods to help key themes and characters come into focus, as well as to create detailed essay plans and summaries (another great revision tool!). I’m happy to go over essays and essay questions too, so do feel free to bring those with you.

My time working in learning support, and my own experience as a student with dyspraxia, has taught me a lot about finding the right learning methods for each student, so please do get in touch if you have any questions – I’d really love to help.

Applying to Uni?

Applying to university can be a lot more stressful than it needs to be! But don’t worry, personal statements needn’t be a cause for concern; in very little time, we can get the most accurate and unique version of you into that frustratingly small character limit. You’ll have no trouble getting everything you want to say down on the page.

Oxbridge applicant?

As an Oxford student, I have loads of first-hand experience & would love to help you make the most of the application process. If you’re sitting the ELAT or MLAT, we can have a look at that too and make sure nothing fazes you on the day.

Niamh has been great! Good coverage of literary materials: breadth AND depth. Her knowledge on literary devices is very extensive, her analysis, surgical, and her teaching is both informative and encouraging. Overall, an amazing teacher and one I would recommend wholeheartedly!

Niamh has been a very helpful and dedicated tutor. I have really learnt a lot these few days - this lesson not being an exception! Thanks for expanding my knowledge on literary history and literary techniques in general!
