I'm super flexible with timings and looking forward to working with people to help refine writing skills that will help in lots of ways!

For GCSE, I studied both World Wars, Civil Rights in the USA, the Russian Revolution and the Great Depression. At A Level, the Tudors and the English Reformation, and the Spanish Golden Age, and did my NEA on the Cuban Revolution and Fidel Castro. At University, I have taken modules specialising in Modern Italian History, Mao's China, the global Cold War, including Vietnam and Korean Wars, USA Foreign Policy, the Spanish Civil War and the Arab Israeli Conflict, ethnic conflict in Rwanda and the UN response, as well as the causes and consequences of both World Wars. I am confident in tutoring all of these subjects and more, including Wiemar-Nazi Germany, America 1917-1980 and Health/Power/Empire and the People. I have tutored a range of history topics for AQA, and Edexcel A Level, and iGCSE, AQA, and Edexcel GCSEs.

About my sessions

History and English are such subjective subjects that one method of teaching will not work for everyone.

In my first lessons, I like to get a feel for how you learn and how you are doing in the subject, and I work with you to plan sessions that you feel will benefit you most. It is important for me to understand the goals you have for your subject, as you may want to move up a grade or just gain confidence in the subject content.

In History, this means we can focus on content, if you struggle with remembering facts and figures, or on exam practice, if you need to develop your source analysis or consistent essay arguments. In English, we can focus on poetry or on the set texts for your exams, and we will discuss this together to decide how best to achieve your subject goals.

My lessons usually include a quick warm up activity to get into the swing of things, then the main content of the lesson may be anything from a lecture to a collaborative mind map - depending on what we have agreed will help you best.

I will usually recommend some extra reading for A Level lessons or ask you to research further into a topic, such as context of a text or a new perspective on an event. It's these additional things that will really boost your grades!

My daughter has had two lessons with Esmee so far, one for History and one for English. She is really enjoying her lessons and loves the way Esmee can break things down so she can understand. She looks forward to her lessons and they are filling in the blanks she was missing. Really pleased!!
