About me

As an enthusiastic but patient person, I decided that I was well-suited to tutoring. When volunteering in my last year of school as a Peer Educator with the Red Cross, I enjoyed aiding people in understanding the varieties of issues that I had to present to them. I developed a presentation style that was eloquent and expressive, whilst remaining clear and uncomplicated. It was incredibly rewarding for me, when tutoring in History GCSE in the same period, to help someone to grasp concepts that they had previously found difficult to understand. In addition to this, the skills I learnt as a peer mentor throughout my time at secondary school assisted me in being able to interact with students of a wide range of ages, sensitively and approachably. More recently, I ran a poetry workshop in my college. I thoroughly enjoyed stimulating an understanding of, and consequently an interest in, poetry, and this reignited my interest in educating people. It is important that a tutor is flexible and pragmatic, two characteristics that apply to me. Most of the time, when someone fails to understand something, it is because the person who has tried to teach them it has failed to find an appropriate way of making them understand it. My previous experience has enabled me to communicate in a variety of methods applicable to a variety of learning styles. Although the main aim in tutoring is to help someone to reach a better understanding of a subject, and therefore gain a better grade, it is important that a tutor communicates their interest in that subject to encourage more independent exploration of it. When that is achieved, I feel that my tutoring has been successful.
