About me

About Me: I am a 1st year physics PhD student at Durham University, where I had previously completed my master's degree. Perhaps the most striking take away from this is that I do genuinely enjoy doing physics. This stems from the ability of the science to offer detailed descriptions previously opaque or abstract concepts. This is of course not limited simply to physics and is much the same for mathematics. In either case it is often the challenge in making problems simple that provides the greatest reward, a notion I will try to convey as often as I can within my tutorials.

Over the course of my undergraduate degree I found that tutoring, and more generally teaching, to be a very necessary part of the academic process. This is because it demands a total understanding of the subject matter from the tutor, and it is a thoroughly rewarding experience. As such my main focus during sessions is on improving the understanding of the student. In order to achieve this I will first identify the current understanding level of the student before either developing it further or fine tuning it. This understanding lead approach applies to students of all abilities as it can be used to both answer exams questions and in explaining natural phenomena.

About my sessions

The Sessions: these will either be focused on improving application of pre-existing knowledge (i.e. exam technique) or on improving subject understanding. The former will be achieved through a mixture of past paper questions and problems I devise myself. Sessions of this format will largely focus on the most challenging question of a particular type rather than completing ones they were already able to.

For understanding lead sessions, I would go over all of the main understanding points prior to the session. The session would then be generally split into three sections the first of which being a period of talking about and around the topic so I can identify the parts which the student does not understand. From here I can help to develop their intuition of the subject through simple problems, thought experiments and analogies. These ideas can then be applied to some exam style questions and

conceptual questions to test their understanding.

In both cases I believe the most important thing for a student to develop is the opportunity to apply information. The key is in their ability to grasp the concepts. The precise wording or working of answer problems is best to develop following their understanding.

If you have any questions, send me a 'WebMail' or book a 'Meet the Tutor Session'!. I hope to see you soon!
