About me

Hello! My name is Abigail, though my friends call me Abbie, and I study history at the University of Oxford. I am in my second year and really love my degree. My fascination of the past started in Year 9 and from that point I joined all the history clubs, started my own, ran history trips across the country for my friends, and established a school magazine discussing cultural affairs. Now I preside over my university college history society, the most recent talk of which was on witchcraft (my...

Now I preside over my university college history society, the most recent talk of which was on witchcraft (my favourite area of study). I want to help kindle a passion for the past in other students, or help those that already have one explore the subject on a deeper level. History is story-telling, and once you nail how to answer exam questions you can truly enjoy what it has to say. I can offer tips, techniques, and genuine enthusiasm for the subject - hopefully I will get to work with you soon!

About my sessions

At GCSE, I would assist the tutee in developing their essay techniques and writing style to produce a top quality piece of writing. At GCSE, I would assist the tutee in developing their essay techniques and writing style to produce a top quality piece of writing. I would spend a majority of the lesson going through writing exercises, such as on introductions, conclusions, examples, structure, and planning. The lesson would be collaborative; I would like to brainstorm ideas in response to exam questions and talking about the topic so that they come to feel comfortable discussing it. These periods would come at the end of the lesson so that the tutee can see how their ideas have progressed.

At A-Level, there is greater room for original thought. I would spend more time developing confidence to be bold in one's ideas and looking at the student's topics more deeply, giving tips on how to be different from the many other students taking their paper. I would still spend time on exam technique. These tutorials would be more focused on what the tutee feels like they need to look at or brush up on, for the A-level papers give them more freedom. I would tailor the sessions to what they felt they needed and this way could more efficiently measure their progress by assessing how they felt before and after the session.

In encouraging learning, enthusiasm and passion are infectious. One should motivate the student by commending their achievements and reassuring them when studying feels hard. Placing an emphasis on small victories can be really helpful in completing a large task, too.
