About me

I'm currently a student on the MA in Contemporary Literature, Culture, and Theory at King's College London.

I chose my subject because it allows me to explore a huge variety of social, political and historical issues through the lens of literature, which I think is the most enjoyable and most useful thing about studying English.

I chose my subject because it allows me to explore a huge variety of social, political and historical issues through the lens of literature, which I think is the most enjoyable and most useful thing about studying English.

During sixth form I was at an international school so I took the International Baccalaureate as my diploma, which was a great experience as it allowed me to take a variety of subjects and therefore develop different studying methods according to those different subjects.

I've applied to University several times — once for my undergraduate, once for my Masters and once for the PGCE course which I will be starting in September — so I have quite a bit of varied experience on that front! It's definitely a stressful experience but the results are extremely rewarding.

Over time I've realised that my goal is to become a secondary school teacher. I was lucky enough to have amazing English teachers in every school I've attended, so I'm really excited to start working with students and hopefully help them discover and hone their own passion for English!

About my sessions

My priority when structuring, preparing and delivering Online Lessons is to keep the student's individual personality in mind. I've found that the best way to learn is to try and develop tools and methods that can be applied to any situation.

My priority when structuring, preparing and delivering Online Lessons is to keep the student's individual personality in mind. I've found that the best way to learn is to try and develop tools and methods that can be applied to any situation.

Before the lesson, I will prepare my best response to the task — for example, a GCSE essay question. Then, during the Online Lesson itself, I'll take the student through what I think is the best methodology for that task — in this case, organising the fundamental elements of any essay structure. Having gone through this, we can then start drawing on the student's prior knowledge and applying the methodology to the task. I find that the best way to do this successfully is to guide the student through what they already know and help them arrive at the answer through their own reasoning.

In terms of progress, if a student improves at reading an essay question and successfully summarising its requirements, implications and the necessary structure they'll need to follow in order to answer it, I would deem that to be excellent progress. I think that this kind of 'measurement' is really encouraging for students as it helps them take charge of their own learning and become aware of how they are improving. I also think it's a great way for them to become more confident in working individually as they can fall back on well-practiced methods that can be applied to even the most daunting task.
