About me

I chose to study philosophy, firstly, because philosophy underlies everything, and links everything together. This unifying, philosophical approach to all of the aspects of life, particularly my academic subjects, is something that comes very naturally to me, and permeates everything I do, including the way I think, the way I write (including in my poetry/music), and the way I communicate. My particular favourite philosophers and topics include Nietzsche, existentialism, aesthetics, metaphysics and literary works with philosophical approaches like Dostoevsky's 'The Idiot'. I also adore any English literature that allows my philosophical predispositions to run wild, especially like Shakespearean drama, the metaphysical poets, and Russian literature of the 19th century.

Whilst at university, I have spent my extra-curricular time almost wholly creatively, by directing and modelling in two charity fashions shows. In the latter, DUCFS as a whole raised £150,000 for EJF, and being part of the directing team for my college fashion show allowed me to express my creative vision through a variety of mediums. I also regularly write and perform music, as I play the piano, drums, sing and write music. This creativity permeates every part of my tutoring style, and sets me apart from other tutors and the experience in the classroom, as I always incorporate a unique and individually tailored approach to each students’ needs.

About my sessions

My lessons will have a strong emphasis on the importance of uniting the assessment criteria and syllabus content as parts of the same whole. It is harmful to teach exam technique and content separately, as it encourages an incoherent approach to answering exam questions. For example, many students lose easy marks by adding in critical quotations, contextual knowledge, and examples that don’t relate to their own argument. By teaching in a way that links together these aspects required to produce a strong essay, students will naturally be inclined to build a well structured essay.

I will also gauge which learning style is best for the student, to tailor the above to what the student best responds to. I will further encourage a continuous dialogue about what the student would like to achieve through my tutoring sessions, with freedom for me to include the important wider academic contextualisation of the skills I will teach, so that their lessons extend past the goal of passing exams. This will also include the option of extended reading where appropriate, and culminates in a uniquely individual approach.

Furthermore, I will measure progress by finishing each of my sessions with a short, verbal test to make sure that knowledge is consolidated enough for the student to be able to discuss the topic with me. Confidence of discussion is a good indicator of strength of knowledge, and it will help me gauge which areas need more/less attention.
