About me

Hi there!

I'm Sophie, I am 20 years old and currently in my third year studying Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh.

I chose to study Chemistry as I love how it can explain things happening around us day to day and unlock new secrets of the world! Hi there!

I'm Sophie, I am 20 years old and currently in my third year studying Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh.

I chose to study Chemistry as I love how it can explain things happening around us day to day and unlock new secrets of the world! For example, chocolate actually forms different crystalline structures, and depending on the type of crystal formed affects if the chocolate melts in your hand or at a higher temperature. Wanting to understand the World has also given me a love for Physics, which I also study at University as a secondary course.

When at sixth form, I studied Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Product Design (to AS level), originally intending to apply to Materials Science courses. When I realised I loved the theory behind the world more than how to apply the theory, I decided to apply to study Chemistry. I loved (most) the content of each of my A levels but found it very frustrating when I didn't understand something or got stuck. Through lots of studying and the help of some great tutors, I got through my exams and landed a place at my first choice University! I would not be where I am without those tutors and would love to be able to help you like they helped me.

When I get out of the Chemistry lab, I love to spend my time cooking food, being part of the Makeup and SFX society, playing guitar and going to the gym.

About my sessions

Initially we will have a look at what your problem areas are, where you need to develop understanding or if there are any types of questions that regularly give you a headache! Then together we will break down these issues and look at the basics to help work out what to do, and give you lasting knowledge to get you through the exams. I believe that then through practising you will also gain the confidence you need.

I believe that then through practising you will also gain the confidence you need.

Before the initial session it would be great if you could collect together what you want to go over, including any homework/exam style questions or content that you have struggled on. For any following sessions I will most likely bring either new materials or some questions to go over with you.

During A levels and even now, I find the most effective way to learn is by breaking down any problem areas to the constituent parts, getting an understanding of what each part means, drawing out the system (if applicable) and finally practising, practising and more practising until it sticks in my head! Sometimes the best way to learn the right answer is by getting it wrong in the first place. This is how I will most likely guide you although let me know if there is a more specific way I can help you to learn.
