About me

Having studied English at A-Level, where I recieved an A* grade, I consider myself to be a keen reader and have developed a real interest in a wide range of literature. I particularly enjoy reading, studying and analysing certain works of Shakespeare as I feel there is a tremendous overlap between his plays and some of the Philosophical ideas I have come accross since studying Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, where I am going in to my 4th year.

I have also tried to pursue my interest in all things French. An A grade at A-Level lead me to spend some time working in Paris over one of my summer holidays where I pushed my language skills towards near fluency.

I can offer tuition in the subjects, of English & French GCSE, as well as Philosophy

Outside of the classroom I am a sporty, energetic and organised individual. Having recently completed a 60 mile ultra-marathon where I raised over £800 for charity, I have developed a real sense of how important planning, preparation and perseverence is when taking on a big task.

At school I was a head of house so I oversaw the daily lives of over 70 boys which allowed me to develop communication skills, particularly through listening to any issues that a boy might have but also to help point them in the right direction should a problem arise.

About my sessions

I believe in being clear about targets and how those targets can be achieved. I will ask what the pupil wants to get out of the session and then supplement this with my own targets. I believe in being clear about targets and how those targets can be achieved. I will ask what the pupil wants to get out of the session and then supplement this with my own targets. It's important to identify a pupils strengths at this point too, so we can build confidence and reassurance by covering material that they feel comfortable with. Together we will lay out a "road-map" to help us see how a) we can reach our aims and b) how we might get past any potential stoppers. All of this won't take too long but it gives both the pupil and I an opportunity to be clear about what we will be covering and how we will do it.

We will identify key themes, ideas and questions in a joint brainstorming session using a mind map. Once we have done this we will be in a good position to approach exam style questions using past papers. We will review the questions using the official Mark Schemes. This gives the pupil a clear idea of what they did right, but also the kind of model answers that show them where they should be aiming for. Having reviewed the exam style questions we will identify a) what we did well b) what we didn't do well and c) how we can improve on what we didn't do well on.
