About me

I have loved mathematics from a young age, and I was encouraged by my mother (a maths teacher) to pursue this passion. After my A-levels, I applied to read maths at university. To be accepted, I had to take the MAT and interview. The MAT was a test like those I had done in school previously, though harder and touching on subjects I had not yet seen. In the interview I had to express my passion for the subject, as well as my ability to take in new information and think analytically. At univers...

At university, I was delighted by the new subjects available to me; I understood that mathematics was much broader than calculations and techniques. I enjoy maths because it becomes a puzzle you can solve logically, with surprising and beautiful patterns emerging from nothing.

My Hobbies include playing Go, an ancient Chinese board game with simple rules and a surprising depth, walking my dog, and playing Dungeons and Dragons with my friends. My tutoring style is concentrated on the idea that understanding must be built on understanding. To that end I make sure I listen to the students and find where they are confident, and where they need help. If they are struggling with a concept, I find that going back to where they do grasp the ideas and working up from there can have great effect. I also believe that memorizing equations and formulae is much easier if you are shown how they arise, so I try to include that before moving on to problems.

About my sessions

I will prepare for my lessons by reviewing the material and assessing which points may be confusing, as well as the best way to separate the subject into understandable chunks. In the lesson, I will make sure I know where the student is on the subject, and how confident they are, and continue to build upon that with the new information. I will then go through some examples, and follow that by going through a few questions with the student. This gives them the opportunity to practice what they...

This gives them the opportunity to practice what they have learned, and lets me decide how well they have understood the topic. Once I believe they are confident, we will move on to the next portion.

To see how well they have progressed, I will ask them to solve problems on their own, and review them with the student. At this point, I think it is important to be positive and supportive if the students are making mistakes, but also praise good work. Even more than that I wish to encourage any interest the students find in the subject, as enjoyment in the subject will naturally make the student more open to learning.
