About me

Hi, I'm Emily and I study physics at university though I also have a great passion for maths. I chose physics because I find the subject fascinating, the way it explains how the universe works and examines every detail; fitting seemingly completely different ideas together to allow an understanding of something greater.

I do however understand that not everyone sees the subject this way, physics covers so much, and it can complicate ideas that appear to not need such deep analysis....

I chose physics because I find the subject fascinating, the way it explains how the universe works and examines every detail; fitting seemingly completely different ideas together to allow an understanding of something greater.

I do however understand that not everyone sees the subject this way, physics covers so much, and it can complicate ideas that appear to not need such deep analysis. The further I progress through my own education the more I can see this, which is partially why want to tutor. I have always been good at breaking down more abstract ideas into something easily visualized and relate them to what is already known, making them far easier to understand. By doing this with people who don't necessarily enjoy physics and maths or find them difficult to grasp, I want to allow them to appreciate and enjoy such a fundamental part of life. Or at least make their exams far easier and less stressful.

I am a dedicated athlete and I spend a lot of time training which makes studying difficult, I always found I was too tired in school or didn't have enough time and exams were a particularly stressful period. I understand how work can pile up and how sometimes everything seems too much to handle. I want to help.

About my sessions

In my sessions I usually have quite a visual approach. I like to take complicated concepts and break them down into parts that we can understand by comparing them to things we already know, then building them back up step by step. I find this works especially well with physics as most of the subjects that are covered in school are things that relate back to everyday life. We know that if you go up on a seesaw the other end goes down, you just might be unsure how or why. This can be more diffi...

This can be more difficult with certain maths methods, but it still works well using graphs or diagrams.

I also go over a lot of past exam questions as its important to see how the questions are structured and what form they want your answers to be in. A lot of problems I have found people to have with A level's and GCSE's isn't a lack of knowledge, it's a lack of understanding how to apply that knowledge in a way that matches the strict mark scheme.

This tutoring isn't about me however, it's about you and how to help you understand things. I try to fit how I teach to the person I'm tutoring. There are so many ways of explaining a single idea, but in school, with so many pupils in the class, usually the teacher can cover only one. With our tutoring sessions I can run through several of these ways until we can be sure you fully understand before moving on. This is a two-way session and I will listen as much to what you have to say as you would to me.
