Hello,

I'm Olivia Jackson and I study English Literature at Newcastle University and am really passionate about my subject! I love English because I believe it is such a dynamic subject that everyone can get involved in and find something that interests them. I believe I stand out because I have a wide experience with literature and genres and am passionate about anything from romance novels to epic poetry. I love how there is so many different ways to approach this subject and not one right answer meaning that there is so much space for creativity, individuality and just to have fun! I believe I can help students improve by taking time to find out exactly what that student struggles with and make that a focal point, step by step working together to improve. I think one of the most effective ways to learn is to find out a way to make it enjoyable for you and find a learning style that works rather than sticking to a 'one way suits all' approach. Being a student myself and still in education gives me a unique outlook as I believe I am close to not only the subject but the pressures of education and can therefore relate well to the student.

About my sessions

My lessons will be structured with a small goal each week that once achieved will lead to tackling the problem the student is having with the subject. Rather than trying to tackle everything at once, I believe it is important to break things down and work with what the student feels is best for them- giving them a voice. I believe debates are great along with working with texts that the student is interested in. Therefore, if I was covering how to plan for an essay, I may encourage the studen...

Therefore, if I was covering how to plan for an essay, I may encourage the student to bring a text they love even if this is a magazine or any form of literature to show how my method works and engage. To measure progress, I believe it is important to continually monitor essays written by the student but also have mini-quizzes at the beginning of each lesson to check whether the information is sticking and transferring. I will also familiarise myself with the texts the student s studying, reading any I have not already so we are on the same page and can discuss individual sections in great depth.I believe it is important to focus on what the greater goal is; an example of this would be if the student has a career path they are desperate to pursue I would present the subject as a test/obstacle that they have to overcome to reach this and use that as motivation, trying to inspire some real interest along the way that will hopefully last a life time. There is something in English for everyone and I want to find that something for all my students!
