About me

When GCSE pupils get in touch with me asking for systematic revision preparation or a quick procrastination session, I always prioritise 1 key technique. I call it the 'extension method' which works repeatedly from what my previous tutees tell me. Not only did they all manage to attain the grades they wanted, but they saw significant progress in their quality of written and spoken language in the longterm.

Because it is true that if you are aiming for top marks in GCSE English Language, English Literature, History, Classical Greek, Latin, or French, you need good writing skills. These allow you to keep the question in focus and make your response convincing - so much so that the examiner just *has* to give you those marks!

This is the aim of the 'extension method': to equip you with a skill that is as key as knowing the material from the textbook. The goal is to help you cultivate the autonomy and the correct attitude needed to decode and use knowledge.

As for me, I am final year Classics student at the University of Edinburgh, passionate about the Arts and Humanities. I have the joy to be taught one of the most enriching disciplines at one of the greatest places. And having had inspiring tutors myself, I have the even greater joy to share the knowledge I have gained with others.

Maria has been preparing my home schooling son for his English Literature O'Level exams for the last 3 months. She has plenty of passion and energy for this subject and has been very flexible with our haphazard schedule. Cant recommend her enough. Thank you Maria.

Questions Maria has answered

How do I get top marks in my GCSE History essay?

Although different examination boards seem to have different requirements from pupils when it comes to approaching essay writing in GCSE History, below we will provide some practical tips that are applicable across all boards. A first step is to writing a good GCSE History essay is to read the question very carefully. However sophisticated your argument may be, if it does not answer the question it will not give you top marks. Consistency and focus are key requirements here. You also need to consider the different skills you need to demonstrate to the examiner. GCSE History requires two main areas of skills according to most syllabuses: knowledge and understanding of the history you are studying, and critical and reflective thought. A good historical essay will have a good balance of these two sets of skills. The best way to achieve this balance is through a good structure that will combine facts with a coherent analysis that is tailored around the essay question. Finally, remember that enjoying writing the essay can make the final outcome enjoyable for the examiner too. Finding the right balance between sincere interest in what you are writing and strict self-criticism can help you achieve a highly refined answer to a historical question. Although different examination boards seem to have different requirements from pupils when it comes to approaching essay writing in GCSE History, below we will provide some practical tips that are applicable across all boards. A first step is to writing a good GCSE History essay is to read the question very carefully.
