About me

Hi, I’m Pete and I’m currently studying for my PhD in Chemistry at the University of York. When I have the opportunity I also do science outreach with schools in York, doing experiments with aspiring scientists from reception to year eleven.

Chemistry is a window into how the world works, giving you a greater understanding of the everyday things around you and this can be thrilling and empowering! I'd be happy to empower you, so you can answer question like: Why are leaves green? Why can’t food be uncooked? What IS soap?

Everyone learns in different way and in a big classroom there isn’t time to fit the material to everyone's needs, but I can. I’d love to work with you to focus on the things you struggle with the most in a way that complements how you learn to broaden your understanding and give you confidence in your abilities!

About my sessions

I like to tailor the session to your needs so the way we engage with material will develop as I get to understand your needs. I like to tailor the session to your needs so the way we engage with material will develop as I get to understand your needs. I strive to make sessions based around your goals, modules, assignment or homework and engage with them in an interactive way to reinforce your understanding. If there are things you’re struggling with especially, the last thing you need is another lecture, you need a more bespoke approach and a space where you can freely ask questions and have problems tackled at a pace you’re comfortable with.

The first thing I do is ask some questions to get a sense of how you learn best; what subjects are your strongest? What classes do you find most interesting or fun? Tell me about a really good lesson you remember and why it was memorable.

I’ll also need to get an idea of where you are in chemistry education; what material are you currently covering or recent assignments or exams you are working toward, especially focusing on the things that you are finding the hardest.

From there I will develop a tutorial where I will prepare some scenarios we can work through together, drawing from problems you've been assigned, textbooks and past exam papers where appropriate. These scenarios could be worked problems, chemical structures and functionality, nomenclature or use of precise scientific language and writing, among many topics. I can also give preliminary feedback and comments on practice exams and papers.
