About me

Hi I'm Joanne! I study History and Politics at the University of York, and in my spare time I like to do debating and Model United Nations. I love problem-solving and working out how to structure an argument, and I find subjects like English, History and Politics to be a great way to build on those skills. I also understand what it’s like to go through the process of university applications and sitting countless exams, having gone through a variety of changes of course and specification....

I love problem-solving and working out how to structure an argument, and I find subjects like English, History and Politics to be a great way to build on those skills. I also understand what it’s like to go through the process of university applications and sitting countless exams, having gone through a variety of changes of course and specification. Ultimately, I find these subjects fascinating at any level – and teaching is a great way to build on them. Having worked with a variety of ages through working as a debating mentor for the English Speaking Union, I really enjoy the academic challenge of building on different ideas, and I’m here to give the feedback and skills you need to achieve the grade you want.

About my sessions

My sessions will be focused on the areas tutees want help on: this could include a particular topic area, going through a certain type of exam question, or building on previous feedback. I find working from the strengths the tutees already have (for example, the areas of knowledge they are most interested in) and building a bridge to the skills they want to improve on to be the most accessible way to help them improve. This is often best done through taking a close look at example questions,...

I find working from the strengths the tutees already have (for example, the areas of knowledge they are most interested in) and building a bridge to the skills they want to improve on to be the most accessible way to help them improve. This is often best done through taking a close look at example questions, giving students the opportunity to approach a particular area, with direct feedback on how to improve. If necessary, work to build on what has been taught in the lesson can be given as a guide for the next area e.g. an exam question to plan.

Joanne taught my son who is in Year 10. He was overwhelmed by the English topic and himself asked for help. Thanks to Joanne’s tuition and his own effort, he regained quickly confidence. Thank you for your time and dedication. The results are obvious and faster than I’d thought.

We were extremely lucky to find Joanne. Joanne was fully prepared for every single lesson, her knowledge of the curriculum, texts, poetry, … everything!! was superb. She encouraged, motivated, explained and supported my son throughout his GCSE revision. As lessons progressed I saw my sons confidence grow and his belief shift from 'I can't' to 'I can', this was just awesome to see. Thank you so much Joanne for everything.
