Hi, I'm Alice. I am currently in my first year studying Arabic, French and Spanish at St Andrews University. I love learning languages because of the magical satisfying feeling that you get when you are able to communicate with people who don't speak your languages. Studying three languages allows me to see the similarities and differences in the grammatical structures of the different languages something which fascinates me. I want to tutor to help students to discover the magic of language learning. I know that learning a language at school can sometimes be quite boring so I want to make my lessons as enjoyable as possible while packing in lots of content. Being part of the French and Hispanic societies also means that I know the importance of speaking in the language as often as possible and so I will try to incorporate this in my teaching to allow the student to feel more comfortable speaking with anyone in a foreign language.

About my sessions

Having mentored students, I know that motivation is very important when it comes to making progress; students need to want to learn. Therefore, I want to make my lessons fun so that students are learning without really realising it. I know that everyone has a different way of learning and I will incorporate this in my teaching style, trying out different techniques to find out which one best suits the individual students, whether it be learning by repetition, visual aids or playing games. Learning a language is quite a complex process with many different skills so I will divide the time into sections for vocabulary, grammar and speaking, meaning that everything is covered. This will also help with concentration. There will be mini-tests occasionally to check the student's progress, to find out what information they have retained and what may need returning to. Overall, I want the student to feel that they themselves are making progress, which helps to boost confidence, essential for learning a language.

Alice was an incredibly patient tutor. Very friendly, well prepared, and culturally knowledgeable - her examples of times when French has really helped her out IRL are very inspiring! In our first hour we covered a lot of ground, with seamless links to extra context. Will definitely be working with Alice again.
